Tony Magni has served as the Head Cross Country Coach at Detroit Catholic Central High School since 1973, building one of the most respected and successful running programs in the state of Michigan. With a coaching career spanning over five decades, Coach Magni has dedicated his life to mentoring student-athletes, fostering teamwork, and cultivating a culture of excellence.

Professional Journey & Background

Coach Magni’s family immigrated to the United States from Ceprano, Frosinone, Italy over 70 years ago. He began his legendary coaching career in 1968 at St. Paul High School. Following the closure of St. Paul, he briefly joined the coaching staff at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Preparatory School.

In 1973, during a historic lunch meeting with the Catholic Central Athletic Director, Magni was offered a teaching position alongside the roles of Head Cross Country Coach and Assistant Track Coach. Over fifty years later, he continues to lead the Shamrocks' Cross Country program with the same passion and dedication as his very first season.

Championship Legacy & Honors

Under Coach Magni's leadership, the Catholic Central Cross Country program has achieved historic success at the local, regional, and state levels:

  • 27 Catholic High School League (CHSL) Championships

  • 17 State Regional Championships

  • 6 Division 1 State Meet Championships

In recognition of his elite impact on the sport and his student-athletes, Coach Magni was honored as the National Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2012 by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA).
